The mid- to far-infrared region contains a wealth of diagnostic spectral features but is basically unexploited in the study of asteroid surface composition. We propose to study the composition of primitive asteroids by obtaining low resolution spectra in the range 2-45 microns. The observations will yield insights into the composition, mineralogy, physical nature and distribution of solid materials on the surfaces of asteroids. We will also observe a few more evolved asteroids ("C-type") for comparison. With these observations, we wish to investigate dark, volatile-rich asteroids and their relation to comets, believed to be among the most primitive objects of the solar system.
