We propose to use the PHT-C camera on the ISO to make fully-sampled
maps of the far-infrared continuum emission in two nearby spiral
galaxies, Maffei 2 and IC 342. These galaxies are sufficiently
close that ISO maps can distinguish different regions within the
disk, such as spiral arms and nuclear star-forming complexes. We
plan to fully map the optical extent of both galaxies at 60, 100,
and 160um. Multi-wavelength maps allow the study of dust emission
properties such as luminosity and color across the disks of the
galaxies. We will compare the far-infrared images of the two
galaxies with CO, HI, radio continuum, and near-infrared images.
The goal of the project is to study how dust temperatures,
luminosities (star formation rate), and luminosity-to-mass ratios
(star formation efficiencies) vary with location and gas
properties in two representative normal spiral galaxies.
